For the next ten days, they developed a work routine that focused on making sure Walter worked on his invention for as much as 10 hours each day. Walter sat at his desk scribbling and drawing. Occasionally, Walter would open a book or go on the computer to research something on the internet. Riesling made sure that Walter was fed, watered and kept to the strict routine she devised for him. You might think Walter would protest against being made to work so hard; in fact the opposite is true, he loved every minute of every hour of every day they spent together and wished it would never end. For the first time in his life, he felt he had a purpose and something worthwhile to achieve all thanks to this wire-haired bacon butty eating vision of loveliness in his house.
On the 11th day, Riesling walked in with a tray of coffee and assorted biscuits and said to Walter what she says to him every time she walks in with something for him to eat or drink: “how is it going pet?”. Walter usually answers by saying: “oh, it’s coming along, along, along pet” but this time he had a different answer:
Walter: I think I finished!
Riesling: have you pet? Show me then!
Walter: I don’t know where to start
For the next two hours Walter explained to Riesling his piles and piles of diagrams and explanations. Riesling didn’t understand everything but she could tell this was something special and unique. Just to make sure she got the essence of the invention she asked: “so, what you are saying pet that this is a personal device that someone can walk into Currys or Comet and buy, they would attach one end which looks like a leech with a tail to their ear and the other end which looks like the lens of sunglasses goes round and rests over one eye so that when they turn it on they can watch a music video or watch a movie, isn’t it pet”. Walter said she put it very well and added: “what you watch on it is anything at all because the leech part of the design that curls round the ear, has a SIM card that links to the internet and with this small hand held device, you can choose to download music videos, films, football matches, stock exchange news, or anything at all”.
Riesling threw her arms round Walter and told him he was her clever pet. Walter liked that very much. Walter said he now needed a day or two to enter all these diagrams and scribbles on his computer to make sure he didn’t lose the vital elements of the invention.
For the next couple of days Walter sat at his computer typing his specifications and drawing diagrams using special software and in some cases scanning his own sketches to make sure he got every element of his invention covered. He wanted to be sure his application would not be rejected or returned for further information.
Walter finished entering his iPatch design on his computer on Thursday evening just before dinner. He went upstairs for a shower while Riesling finished preparing dinner. Finally, Walter came downstairs and sat down at the dinner table in the kitchen for a special meal of bacon and avocado salad with Riesling white wine!
Riesling: Walter pet, we are both going back to work on Monday, why don’t we spend the next three days relaxing and having fun?
Walter: yes, yes, yes. Eh, what do you have in mind?
Riesling: let’s go somewhere we have never been and do something we have never done!
Walter: ok, ok, ok. What?
Riesling: well pet, we can go to Alton Towers to do the scary rides, or we can go to London to see Buckingham Palace, or we can go to the Cheltenham Race Course, or we can go to the shops in Bristol. What do you think pet?
Walter: I don’t mind any of these suggestions, you are better at deciding so you decide
Riesling: why don’t we draw an idea out of a hat
